Q&A – Whats the Best TDI Model?

We just completed our full review of the all new 2012 Passat TDI and the hardest question to answer was wether it was better than its siblings, the Jetta TDI, Golf TDI and SportWagen TDI.

We are in the middle of deciding which of the new models we want to pick up.  Here are some strong points for each model.

Jetta TDI

  • Lowest Base Price

Golf TDI

  • Great Size
  • Made in Germany
  • True “Euro” car that is the same as the European Golf
  • Euro-ness means great upgrade options

Passat TDI

  • Made in USA – means more value for the price
  • Extremely Spacious
  • Higher Quality Interior
  • Apparently more efficient

SportWagen TDI

  • Extreme Utility
  • Also identical to European counterpart
  • Great upgrade options

Those are our thoughts on the strong suits of all the models.  Which model would you buy?  Let us know in the comments below…

My wife and I have an 08 JettaWolf lease return and will take delivery on a Passat TDI DSG in about two weeks. It was a scary moment when we realized that we’ll need room for children before our next car is paid off!

Scary indeed! Its when car owning goes from fun/enthusiast to utility/necessity…with a splash of enthusiast if you can manage!

I bought the Golf TDI due to the “Europeaness” ; specifiaclly the suspension tuning but would like to have the cargo room of the JSW. Oh well. Mine now has 60k miles and I enjoy driving it still.

Just drove a ‘12 Golf and a ‘12 Wagon back to back. The Golf is certainly more “European” feeling. I’m torn…I think the “over the edge” thing is that the Golf comes from Europe. I don’t think it matters build quality wise, but it makes me feel special.

Hola, buenas noches, en noviembre de 2011 estrené un jeta TDI , despues de 5,000 Km. me sigue dando aproximadamente 11 Km por litro, alguien sabe a que se debe esto? Gracias.

Just purchased a ‘12 Golf TDI Highline in White. Luckily it’s already in transit from the factory so I need to wait 3 weeks at most. Very excited, I did not know whether I want a Jetta TDI, Golf TDI or Golf Wagon TDI but after months of thought and research I went for the Golf TDI. For me it’s not so important to have a buttload of cargo space, while sportier suspension and european-ness I would never want to give up. Very excited for it to arrive
