Making up for the pitiful 2011 choice of the Chevrolet Volt, Motor Trend has named the new 2012 Passat TDI the 2012 Car of the year.
There isn’t anything new here in our minds, the things that have made the TDI powered VWs so spectacular are the same things that Motor Trend cited as the reasons it won this year.
We have to commend the extra space and larger fuel tank, though.

I totally concur with Motor Trend. I’ve my Passat TDI for 2 months now and still impressed with how good the really is. Would recommend this car strongly to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, spacious, fuel efficient car that’s a blast to drive. 2 thumbs up VW!
I’ve had my Passat TDI for 3 weeks and it is one amazing car to drive. A very unique combination of fuel efficiency, luxury sedan and german handling (on a reasonable budget). Great on the highway and still fuel efficient and quick shifting in town with the DSG. A huge back seat and trunk for all the family and gear. I drove the 2012 Accord and 2012 Camry and went back for a final drive of the Passat and it was a very easy decision.
I’m extremely envious of both of you. Saw a beautiful Passat TDI in a parking lot today, every time I see one it makes it harder to not drive right to the VW dealer.
Go for it, I have had my TDi Passat for 2 weeks, love it, ave 38 mpg. My second TDi, have a 2005 Jetta TDi wagon, 85K miles, ave 43 mpg with NO problems. Great reliability…..Will go for another 300K miles easy!
