New Beetle TDI [1998-2003]

The New Beetle TDI was the first model built on VW’s A4 platform, later shared by the MkIV Jetta and Golf.  Thus, engine options are identical and other components, such as suspension, are completely interchangeable between New Beetles and their Golf/Jetta brothers.  The Audi TT also shares the A4 chassis, and the New Beetle is the best handling of the VW A4 models.

In the model years of 19995. to 2003 the Golf TDI was powered by a 1.9 liter turbocharged direct injection diesel.

Engine Specifications:

  • Engine Code: ALH
  • Horsepower: 90 @ 3800 RPM
  • Torque: 157 lb/ft @1950 RPM
  • Injection Pump Type: Rotary

The early years of the ALH engine used a timing belt that was rated for 60,000 miles.  An update in 2002 pushed the change interval to 80,000 miles.  Finally, in 2003 the interval was pushed to 100,000, though there is some debate as to if the components themselves, rather than the belt, can be used for that long reliably.
